Why This Matters
The video uses the Titanic as a metaphor for a question larger than any one economic forecast: what should people do when they believe important systems may be heading toward serious trouble? Park Worlds’ view is that increased attention to possible crises and increased attention to solutions should happen in parallel. Some people do not believe there is a dollar or debt crisis; some describe the problem primarily as an affordability crisis; and some do not believe widespread unaffordability necessarily requires people or institutions to change what they are doing. Park Worlds does not need everyone to agree on one diagnosis before more people can work on possible solutions.
Resistance to seriously considering a possible crisis may be unwise, but repeatedly sounding an alarm without proposing, trying, supporting, or helping build solutions can become counterproductive too. The cultural shift Park Worlds wants to encourage is more attention, talent, experimentation, and support directed toward possible solutions while the arguments about causes, severity, and forecasts continue.
Many Lifeboats: Mass Entrepreneurship
One strategy is mass entrepreneurship: not one master replacement that everyone must accept, but many ventures, experiments, cooperative efforts, local systems, creative projects, products, services, and other attempts that people can build and operate in different ways. Park Worlds contrasts that possibility with what it views as a highly hegemonic dollar system and global supply chains that can feel like “take it or leave it, but you can’t leave it.” A world with many lifeboats can give people more paths to try, compare, improve, combine, abandon, or teach to others.
The lifeboat metaphor is intentionally plural. Different people may identify different problems and build very different responses. Some attempts will remain small; some may fail; some may become durable enterprises or places; and some may inspire other people to create something new rather than copy the original solution exactly.
Park Worlds as a Lifeboat Shipyard
Park Worlds itself is not intended to be the one lifeboat. The Park Worlds System is designed to function more like a lifeboat shipyard: helping people imagine, design, build, deploy, and operate many possible lifeboats; helping people learn from what happens after launch; and teaching people, or helping them find teachers, for the skills needed to build, deploy, and operate their own projects.
That is why Park Worlds can contain many kinds of creative work, Internet Strategies, design projects, events, enterprises, and paths toward physical space at the same time. The goal is not to prove that every idea is the answer. It is to increase the number of people who can move from recognizing a problem or possibility to actually building something that might help.
